Rukungiri District Returning Officer, Abas K. Namanya, has called for a temporary halt to open campaigns for all candidates who have been duly nominated, pending the harmonization of campaign programs by the Electoral Commission.
Namanya made the remarks today, 5th September 2025, at the close of the registration exercise for District Chairperson, Lord Mayor, Councilor, and Special Interest Group candidates, which began on 3rd September 2025.
He revealed that the exercise had registered overwhelming participation, with three candidates nominated for the District Chairperson seat and 77 Councilors, bringing the total to 80 nominees. Namanya confirmed that all positions have been contested except for Nyarushanje Subcounty and Buyanja Town Council, where candidates are unopposed.
He further noted that the exercise has been smooth, crediting the use of a computerized verification system that replaced the manual process used during the 2020 elections.
Looking ahead, Namanya announced that the nomination of candidates for Municipal and City Divisions, along with Councilors, will commence next week starting Monday. He advised aspiring candidates to complete early verification to avoid delays and to come with only their proposer and seconder rather than large convoys.
