The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) for Rukungiri, Wilberforce Ahimbisibwe Ongom, has issued a strong warning to butchers dealing in uninspected meat, calling for immediate compliance with veterinary regulations to protect public health.

Ongom sounded the warning today during the commissioning of the first phase of the upgraded Kagogo slaughter slab located in Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality. The project, which received over UGX 27 million in funding from the Western Division authorities, aims to improve the quality of meat supply and boost local revenue collection.

He commended the Western Division leadership for effective fund utilization and emphasized the importance of ensuring meat safety for consumers. Ongom disclosed that his office is working closely with veterinary officers to apprehend and prosecute butchers who defy health regulations by selling unstamped or contaminated meat.

Rukungiri Municipality Mayor, His Worship Charles Makuru, welcomed the upgrade and urged the authorities to ensure the proposed works are fully completed, noting that a modern slaughter facility would significantly enhance hygiene and revenue generation.

Ngabi Traders Limited, the contractors in charge of the construction works, assured stakeholders that the works were executed in line with the approved Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and their efforts have been verified by relevant authorities.

Western Division LC3 Chairperson, Sylivia Twinomugisha Katimbira, expressed optimism that the upgraded facility will not only ensure better meat supply but also serve as a source of manure for farmers in the area, opening up additional economic opportunities.

The commissioning marks a significant milestone in improving public health and economic infrastructure in Rukungiri Municipality.
