Authorities in Rukungiri district have vowed to take part in the implementation of the Anti-homosexuality law after being signed by President Museveni.

President Museveni on Monday, signed the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law despite widespread condemnation from many Western governments and human rights activists.

The law, calls for the death penalty for aggravated homosexuality, which is defined as same-sex relations involving HIV-positive people, children, or other vulnerable people. Anyone convicted of attempted aggravated homosexuality can be imprisoned for up to 14 years. Ugandans who engage in gay sex can receive life in prison, while anyone who attempts to have same-sex relations can face 10 years in prison.

The Rukungiri RDC Steven Nsubuga Bewayo hailed the president for willingly signing the bill making it a law thereby vowing to implement it with immediate effect.

He said he will liaise with other security personnel to ensure that the law works in Rukungiri district.

Nsubuga, challenged parents to be vigilant and avoid people who ask to take their children for bursaries, noting that some are promoters of this illegal act.

Geoffrey Kyomukama the Rukungiri district chairperson called upon heads of institutions like schools, churches, and big companies to jointly fight the act since President Museveni has already assented to it.
