Rukungiri district leaders have pledged their support towards addressing the challenges faced by residents using the difficult-to-pass Kabuga Mashunga road and have urged the community to open another alternative route to ease transport and boost economic activities.
The Kabuga Mashunga road, which passes through the hilly and rugged terrains of Nyarushanje, has hindered easy transportation, especially in sections paved with pavers where the slope is dangerously steep. As a result, an alternative route has been proposed to break off from Kabuga down towards Kisiizi.
Speaking to Boona FM, Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi, the Nyarushanje district councillor and Rukungiri District Minister of Health, acknowledged the difficulty faced on the Kabuga Mashunga road, particularly at the steep paved sections, which have complicated transportation activities in the area.
Responding to the residents’ continued concerns, Rwabugumi confirmed that the district is ready to support the creation of another, more favorable route. However, he called on residents to first open the route through communal works as the district prepares to offer more support in the upcoming financial year.
Ainebyona Brian Bantu, the Nyakishenyi district councillor and a member of the Rukungiri District Natural Resources and Works Committee, also echoed his support for the initiative. He urged residents to organize themselves and open the alternative Mukyondo-Kabuga route through Burungi Bwansi (communal work) to make it easier for the district to step in and assist.
Meanwhile, Rukungiri District LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama expressed sympathy for the affected Kabuga residents. He encouraged them to prioritize communal work to open feeder roads that facilitate transport and economic activities. Kyomukama assured residents that the district would also support grading of the routes once the community shows interest and the routes prove valuable.
