Rukungiri District Local Government approved the 2024/2025 Financial Year budget estimates on Tuesday 18th June 2024, amounting to 62,118,632,000/= (Sixty-two billion one hundred eighteen million six hundred thirty-two thousand shillings). This approval came after delays due to disagreements among councilors.

The budget presentation, originally scheduled for 30th May 2024, faced rejection from councilors who protested the non-payment of their sitting allowances for nearly a year. A peaceful protest on Monday 10th June 2024 was followed by the release of their allowances on Wednesday 12th June 2024.

For the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the budget estimates are as follows: Central government funds totaling 60,707,233,887/=, Local revenue contributing 2,475,499,202/=, and Donations adding up to 980,000,000/=.

– Administration: 24,774,620,000/=
– Finance: 398,627,000/=
– Statutory: 914,181,000/=
– Production and marketing: 3,476,760,000/=
– Health: 9,875,137,000/=
– Education: 30,948,970,000/=
– Roads and Engineering: 1,850,913,000/=
– Water: 786,515,000/=
– Community: 488,232,000/=
– Planning: 621,037,000/=
– Internal Audit: 214,354,000/=

Albert Mugisha Rwamugaata, the District Councilor representing Buyanja Sub County, expressed satisfaction with the budget approval but criticized the corruption affecting local revenue collection, which contributes only 2% of the total budget.

Brian Baantu Ainebyoona, representing Nyakishenyi Sub County, expressed gratitude for approving the budget, highlighting its importance for service delivery and the inclusion of outstanding projects.

Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Chairperson LC5 Rukungiri District, emphasized that despite the delayed approval on 18th June, the budget had been submitted to the central government earlier. He noted that the budget priorities were crucial for achieving developmental goals.
