Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner, Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, urged Councilors of Rukungiri Municipality to refrain from intertwining politics with service delivery during the conclusion of the year-end Council session at the Council Hall on Friday, December 22, 2023.
Persistent disagreements among the Councilors, particularly stemming from disputes within sectoral committees, led to the removal of Keijukuru Viani, the Councilor representing Kitimba Ward, as the Chairperson of the Social Services Committee. Turinawe Love, Councilor representing Karangaro ward, assumed the position.
In an effort to resolve the discord, the Council decided to conduct fresh elections, wherein both Keijukuru Viani and Turinawe Love participated. Keijukuru Viani emerged victorious with a vote count of 17 to 3.
Steven Nsubuga Bewayo advised the Councilors to delineate between their political engagements and their responsibilities in service delivery. He emphasized the need for unity to achieve common goals instead of fostering division.
Tumusiime Costance, the Speaker of Rukungiri Municipal Council, expressed gratitude and congratulated Keijukuru Viani, acknowledging that the disputes had been causing discord among the Councilors.
Keijukuru Viani, in response, thanked the Councilors for their trust and overwhelming support, pledging his commitment to the responsibilities entrusted to him.
