Residents of Kagorogoro, Katungu one, and Kibobo villages in Nyakagyeme sub-county, Rukungiri district, are celebrating the inauguration of three boreholes in their respective areas, bringing clean water to the people.

These boreholes are part of a donation of five by the Nile Humanitarian Development Agency, a non-governmental organization funded by the family of Yakup Meryem from Germany. The initiative was prompted by a request from Minister Jim Muhwezi, the Rujumbura county legislator.

The other two boreholes were constructed in Rwebikona village in Ruhinda sub-county and Kabigo village in Buhunga sub-county, with an estimated cost of about 100 million.

Residents and village chairpersons in the benefiting areas expressed their gratitude, stating that their villages previously lacked reliable water sources, leading to residents sharing unclean water with animals, posing serious health risks. Some residents had to walk over 5 kilometers to access clean and safe water.

Godson Mubagizi, the Nyakagyeme Sub-County chairperson, and Mugisha Benon of Buhunga sub-county emphasized that the boreholes are a significant relief for residents, urging the organization to consider implementing more boreholes in other water-stressed areas within their sub-counties.

Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Rukungiri district chairperson, who represented Minister Jim Muhwezi during the borehole commissioning, commended the organization for reaching out to less privileged communities. He appreciated the collaboration between the Minister of Security and the Nile Humanitarian Development Agency, urging the organization to extend their support to other areas in the future.

Isa Kiralire, the chairperson of Nile Humanitarian Development Agency, emphasized that drilling boreholes in Rukungiri district is a vital step in providing essential services to water-stressed villages. He highlighted the persistent challenge of accessing clean and safe water in many Ugandan communities.

Hajji Maskoyi Waswa, the Rukungiri Chief Administrative Officer, and Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, the RDC Rukungiri district, encouraged beneficiaries to form user committees to protect and maintain the boreholes. They expressed gratitude to the NGO for its support in enhancing water coverage in the Rukungiri district.
