Residents and local leaders of Omukibirizi cell in Bwanga parish, Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri district, have expressed their frustration at the absence of electricity in their community.
They recount how their hopes were raised in 2017 when electric poles, wires, and transformers were installed in their area, only to be dashed when unknown individuals dismantled the connections shortly afterward.
Despite reaching out to relevant authorities, they have seen no progress, stalling the development of their locality. Moreover, there are neighboring areas within Bwanga parish that have never had electricity infrastructure, and existing poles are deteriorating.
Jolly Masheija, the Rukungiri district women’s chairperson, echoed the concerns of Omukibirizi residents, highlighting their participation in elections and their disappointment with elected representatives, including the Member of Parliament, who have failed to address their needs.
Many residents had planned economic ventures such as welding shops and salons, only to be thwarted by the lack of electricity. Consequently, they’ve been compelled to relocate to areas with electricity access.
Mrs. Jolly appealed to both district authorities and the government to heed the community’s plea and facilitate the extension of electricity services to their area through UMEME.
