Rukore Two Primary School, a government-aided institution located in Ikamiro parish, Muko Sub County, Rubanda West County, Rubanda district, is facing significant challenges including a shortage of teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and the urgent need for staff accommodation.
Despite having an enrollment of over 150 students, the school operates with only five teachers. An investigation conducted by our reporter found that pupils in the nursery section and Primary One class are forced to share not just one classroom but also a single teacher.
Suzan Kiconco, a teacher responsible for the youngest learners, expressed concern about the lack of manpower. With only five teachers, dividing students into smaller, more manageable groups for personalized attention remains difficult, impacting the quality of education provided.
Kiconco highlighted the negative impact of this shortage on students’ academic performance, as teachers struggle to adequately nurture each child’s potential due to limited resources to address individual needs.
The Deputy Head Teacher, Paul Mugabagye, and senior teacher Ernest Twesigye recalled a time in 2022 when the school had nine teachers. However, when four were transferred, they were replaced by just one, exacerbating the shortage. They also mentioned that the lack of teachers led to the closure of some classes, forcing the school to combine them due to understaffing.
In response, Francis Serununi, the Rubanda District Education Officer, acknowledged the school’s challenges. He admitted the severe shortage of teaching staff and assured that the district administration is taking steps to address the situation. Serununi disclosed that three additional teachers have been sent to the school to alleviate the strain on the educational system.
