Residents and pupils of Rwoya Primary School have a reason to rejoice as a 100-meter water project has been commissioned and handed over to provide safe drinking and domestic water to them.
Funded by the Tusaidiane Trust, a non-governmental organization, the aim of the project is to bring safe water closer to the community, thus reducing waterborne diseases.
Vanasio Natuhwera Bagatireyo, the coordinator of the Rwoya Community Water Project and chairperson of the Rwamagaya Parish Council, expressed gratitude for the support from donors and the community, which facilitated the project’s completion.
He also extended appreciation to Mr. Kees Ebskamp and the Tusaidiane Trust team for their generosity to the Rwoya community. Their donation of textbooks and installation of a water harvesting system has provided safe water to pupils at Rwoya Primary School and the entire community.
According to the Tusaidiane Trust team, led by Mr. Kees Ebskamp and Recheal Tushabe, this project at Rwoya Primary School is valued at over 100 million Ugandan Shillings. It was implemented in two phases, with the first phase involving the installation of six tanks of 10,000 liters each.
In the second phase, water purifiers and community taps were installed, along with four additional tanks. This decision was made after discovering that 25% of pupils were absent due to illnesses caused by unsafe water.
Kees Ebskamp mentioned that the community had to resort to collecting rainwater from Rwoya Catholic Church in the ten septic tanks installed there, as there was no alternative water source in the area.
Julius Turinawe, the headteacher of Rwoya Primary School, expressed gratitude to the Tusaidiane Trust for their support. He emphasized that the water project has significantly reduced waterborne diseases in the school and the surrounding area.
He also thanked the Ugandan government for allowing NGOs to operate in the country, as their presence has contributed to development in the education sector and communities.
Rev. Fr. Charles Mugabi, the parish priest of Rwamagaya Parish in Ruhinda Sub County, commended the support given to the community and Rwoya Primary School. He highlighted that although the community will contribute some funds for maintenance, the project will ensure access to clean water.
Some residents of the Rwoya community are optimistic that the commissioned water project will enhance water and sanitation in the school and the entire community.
