The Rukiga District Council on Thursday recognized and rewarded two primary schools that qualified for the national Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) competitions but were unable to participate due to financial constraints.

During the Regional MDD Competitions held in Kanungu District in August this year, Rukiga Primary School and Kicucwe Primary School, both from Kashambya Sub-County, secured second and third place respectively. However, they did not represent the district at the national level because of limited resources. This prompted the Rukiga District Speaker, Oscar Akampurira, to demand accountability for the co-curricular activity funds from the committee chairperson and the District Education Officer.

Ronah Tweheyo Rwebandira, Chairperson of the Committee, and Vastina Beyendera, the Rukiga District Education Officer, reported that out of the 30 million shillings allocated in the last financial year for co-curricular activities, 17 million shillings were used to support MDD from the zonal to the regional level. They stated that only 892,500 shillings remained, which was insufficient to facilitate participation in the national competitions. The committee recommended using the remaining funds to purchase gifts for the two schools that had qualified for nationals.

During a council session held yesterday in the district council hall, each of the schools was awarded a 32-inch Android television set as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. District Speaker Oscar Akampurira commended the schools for their effort and commitment to excellence.

Headteachers John Paul Tumwijukye of Rukiga Primary School and Julius Besigye of Kicucwe Primary School expressed their gratitude to the district council for recognizing their achievements and remembering their contributions.
