Police in Rukungiri district have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder of a woman allegedly killed by her husband.
The incident occurred in Rwencerere Cell, Burora Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District. The suspect, identified as Lauben Kigori, is accused of murdering his wife, only identified as Nkunda, for reasons yet to be established.
According to local leaders, including Musime Michael, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyarushanje, the couple had a history of domestic violence and had sought counseling on several occasions. However, their efforts to reconcile proved unsuccessful.
Reports indicate that the suspect had recently married another woman, described by locals as a prostitute, and subsequently pressured Nkunda (the deceased) to sell their land, which she refused. The tension escalated, leading Nkunda to leave her marital home and seek refuge with her parents.
This week, Kigori reportedly called Nkunda, promising to resolve their issues and inviting her back home. On Thursday night, after appearing unusually cheerful, the suspect returned home. After the couple retired to their marital bed, Kigori allegedly attacked Nkunda with a panga, killing her and dismembering her body before fleeing the scene.
Residents who learned of the incident rushed to the scene, only to find Nkunda dead. Police from Nyarushanje Police Post were notified, and officers from Rukungiri Central Police Station (CPS) were later involved.
The body was examined at the scene, as it was not in a condition to be transported to Rwakabengo Health Center III Mortuary for further examination. The remains were handed over to the family for burial.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large.
