The LC3 Chairperson of Nyakishenyi Subcounty has made an urgent appeal to the government to address the poor state of health service centers and roads in the area. Speaking to our reporter, Twinomujuni Wednesday, the chairperson highlighted significant challenges facing the community, despite some improvements in educational services.

He noted that Nyakishenyi’s hilly terrain, combined with heavy storms and floods, often damages roads, making transportation difficult for residents and their produce. This situation exacerbates poverty and hunger in families. He emphasized the need for strong culverts and pipes to maintain roads in better condition.

Wednesday also expressed concern about the scarcity of medical facilities in the area. He called on the government to upgrade Nyakishenyi Health Center III to Health Center IV status, complete with an ambulance, theater, and doctor. He further advocated for the upgrade of Katonya Health Center II to Health Center III and improvements to Ngoma and Nyarugando medical centers.

Tumusiime Siira, the area councilor for Nyarugando, shared that residents have been engaging in communal work (“Burungi Bwansi”) to improve local infrastructure. However, Kisizi-Kamaga Road remains in poor condition due to a lack of culverts and damage from heavy storms.

He also raised the issue of electricity shortages, particularly in villages such as Kiina, Marashaniro, Butare, Rwengoha, and Nyamitanga, all located in Nyarugando Parish.

Twikirize Laurence, the area councilor for Katonya, echoed concerns about the poor state of roads in Nyakishenyi. He explained that residents often contribute funds to repair roads, but the lack of culverts and pipes hinders lasting improvements.

Laurence revealed that residents raised 60 million UGX to repair the Rutenga-Kanungu Road. However, they are still burdened with debts and require a grader and additional culverts to stabilize the road.

This appeal underscores the community’s persistent challenges and their need for government intervention to ensure sustainable development in Nyakishenyi.
