The Rukungiri District Council on Friday, December 20, 2024, resolved to establish a new office to oversee district property, with the recruitment of a senior supervisor commencing immediately. This decision follows concerns about significant losses of district property due to a lack of proper supervision.

During the council session held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall, the council resolved that this office will be responsible for managing district property, including furniture, farmland, district houses, and offices. The new office aims to address gaps in supervision and mitigate property losses.

Rukungiri District Council Speaker, Turyamuboona James, emphasized the importance of the new office, stating it will help save money previously wasted on replacing damaged or lost property.

James also expressed gratitude to Hon. Naboth Namanya, Member of Parliament for Rubabo Constituency, for attending the council meeting. The council requested Hon. Namanya to organize a visit to Parliament for them in February next year.

In the same session, the council discussed the ongoing implementation of lightning arresters in schools as resolved in the previous meeting.

According to Caledonia Bakironda, the Secretary for Education, while some schools have installed lightning arresters, others have been granted a grace period until the end of 2025 to comply. She highlighted that this measure is crucial for the safety of students and teachers, citing past incidents where lightning harmed children in schools.

Caledonia also proposed including a budget for extracurricular activities in schools, such as music, dance, drama, scouting, debating, and sports. The council resolved to allocate funds for these activities in the next district budget. This resolution followed concerns about schools in the district qualifying for national competitions but receiving no financial support, raising questions about district priorities.

Hon. Naboth Namanya pledged to facilitate the council’s visit to Parliament, stating that such an initiative would enhance their understanding of legislative processes and improve their deliberations. He commended the council for their vibrant discussions and commitment to addressing issues affecting the people of Rukungiri.

Later in the day, Rukungiri district administrators held their end-of-year party at Riverside Hotel, Rukungiri. During the event, outstanding performers were awarded gifts in recognition of their exemplary service.

Geoffrey Kyomukama, the guest of honor, congratulated the administrators on their achievements and encouraged them to maintain their dedication to district development. He also appreciated Gen. Jim Muhwezi, Minister for Security, and Hon. Naboth Namanya for their support in making the party a success.

Kyomukama noted that the awards were intended to motivate staff to achieve even better results in the future.
