Police in Rukungiri have confirmed the identities of victims involved in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the night of Saturday, April 12, 2025, at around 10:20 p.m. The deadly crash happened at Omukabingo Cell, Buyanja Sub County, along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo Road.
According to a statement released by the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the accident involved two vehicles: an Isuzu bus registration number UBN 331G, belonging to Perfect Bus Company, and a Toyota Hiace (commonly known as a taxi), registration number UBA 341G.
Three people were confirmed dead at the scene. They include:
- Ronald alias Kakimpa, a 35-year-old taxi conductor.
- Liberty Bonance, a 3-year-old child of Congolese nationality.
- An unidentified female passenger from the taxi.
Several other passengers were injured and are currently receiving medical attention at Nyakibale Hospital. Among the injured are:
- Four Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers: Capt. Musinguzi Bright, S/SGT Kwesigwa Edgar, L/CPL Tukwasibwe Alex, and PTE Okello Francis.
- Congolese national Pacific Claude, along with Abenomugisha Blair, Nyabanawe Bernard (62), Tumwebaze Annah, Barisimwaki James (44), Amumpire Jackline, Kiconco Florence, Komushana Oliver, Tayebwa Oscar, Hassan Kakuru, Baryakira Frank (63), Atwongirwe Johnbosco, Mwesigwa Andrew (taxi driver), Tukahirwa Godfrey (bus conductor), and Muzenero Charles.
Police reports suggest that the bus, traveling from Rukungiri towards Ntungamo, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the taxi. The force of the collision caused the bus to overturn, landing on the driver’s side, while the taxi spun and faced the opposite direction.
Police visited the scene, led by Rukungiri District Police Commander SSP Apollo Kyangungu. A sketch plan was drafted, and relevant statements were recorded. The deceased bodies were taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III Mortuary for postmortem examination, while the wreckage of both vehicles is currently parked at the police station awaiting inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).
The driver of the bus reportedly fled the scene and remains at large. Preliminary investigations point to reckless driving by the bus driver as the likely cause of the accident.
Police say investigations are ongoing to trace the bus driver and bring him to book
