Residents of Rubimbwa Parish, Kirima Subcounty, Kanungu District, decry the persistent and long-standing water scarcity challenge in their area.

It is reported that mostly Kitunga Cell is the most affected and has over 200 households who depend on one spring, and due to the overcrowding a big number are forced to depend on swamp and river water.

Speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson LC1 Kitunga Cell, Abel Kwesiga, expressed his frustration saying people reach an extent of fetching water late in the night due to the overcrowding on one spring in the area, as some have to incur transport costs to access it.

He further revealed that this has highly contributed to the spread of water-borne diseases that come with using unclean water, as now hospitals have become people’s homes treating the same.

Bruno Ahimbisibwe, the area Councillor, said Rubimbwa Parish has eight cells with no clear water source as they still share water with animals, which is not recommendable for their lives.

He further said depending on the water they share with animals has highly contributed to the spread of water-borne diseases like Typhoid, as hospitals have become people’s homes, calling for government intervention.

However, speaking to the Chairperson LC3 Kirima Subcounty, David Kamahanga, on the matter, he acknowledged the challenge in Rubimbwa Parish as a whole as they still depend on muddy water but gave hope to the residents that they have written letters to the top leadership to lobby funds to make sure people access water, and said they have received positive responses as they are doing all it takes to see the problem rectified.
