Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner Bron Kikashemeza has urged residents living in hilly areas to stop cultivating on slopes and planting unwanted crops that weaken the soil in Rukungiri District.
RDC Bron revealed while speaking to our reporter following a tragic incident that happened in Nyarushaje Sub-county on Monday, where a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall killed three people.
Kikashemeza said all these incidents are caused by environmental degradation, noting that people dig on hilly slopes and plant unwanted crops, yet they are not supposed to cultivate on such slopes.
He warned that digging and planting on steep hillsides loosens the soil, making landslides more likely during heavy rains.
Kikashemeza also warned residents to stop scooping sand from River Rushaya, saying the practice is weakening the bridge and poses a risk that it could collapse at any time.
The RDC confirmed that the district has already reported the matter to the Ministry of Works and Transport to intervene and carry out repairs. He emphasized that sand mining makes the bridge unstable, especially during heavy rains when water levels rise.
He urged residents to stop the illegal practice immediately to prevent transport disruptions.
