The newly inaugurated 30-member Mbarara District Local Government Council, led by District Chairperson Mr. Hygine Twongirwe Kururagire, has pledged to intensify efforts to fight corruption, particularly in the recruitment of public servants.
Speaking during his inauguration ceremony held at Bwizibwera-Rutooma Town Council in Kashari South, Mbarara District, Mr. Twongirwe raised concern over alleged corruption within the district recruitment process. He directed the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. David Muhwezi, to immediately cancel the ongoing recruitment advertisement for the position of District Engineer following reports that some officials in the district’s human resource office were allegedly demanding a bribe of Shs50 million from an applicant seeking the job.
Mr. Twongirwe emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in public recruitment, noting that Mbarara District has many qualified and competent Ugandans capable of serving diligently without corrupt influence. He also ordered the cancellation of an internal advertisement for the recruitment of Parish Chiefs, calling for an open recruitment process to allow equal opportunity for all eligible candidates.
The district chairperson further called upon Members of Parliament and government agencies to work together in eliminating corruption and promoting accountability in public service.
Meanwhile, Kashari South Member of Parliament, Capt. JB Tumusiime Bamuturaki, expressed concern over the challenge of corruption, saying some local political leaders have become compromised, making efforts to combat the vice more difficult.
Leaders at the event emphasized the importance of collective action and integrity in strengthening service delivery and restoring public trust in government institutions.
