Residents of Masya parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri district, have voiced their concerns regarding the escalating theft in their community.

According to Edison Kahesha, the chairperson of LC 1 at Nyabugando Trading Centre in Masya parish, residents have suffered significant losses of property, including livestock, crops, and goods from shops, due to robberies.

Kahesha mentioned that despite efforts by the local leaders to establish a security committee to address the issue, their attempts have been thwarted by residents who are aware of the perpetrators but hesitate to report them to the authorities.

Mayanja Obed, the parish councilor for Masya Parish, attributed the surge in theft to criminals with connections to the butcher community in Rukungiri town. He highlighted that theft has become a daily occurrence, creating a sense of insecurity among the residents.

He further noted that the stolen animals are often slaughtered within the community, suggesting that the perpetrators are familiar individuals rather than outsiders.

In response, Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, the RDC of Rukungiri district, urged local leaders, particularly LC1 Chairpersons, to rigorously screen village security committees and implement night patrols to combat theft effectively.

Nsubuga also issued a stern warning to the thieves, emphasizing that they will face consequences if caught, as citizens are now apprehensive about rearing animals due to the prevalent theft.
