Authorities in Kitumba Sub County, Kabale District, have expressed deep concern about the rising incidence of domestic violence in the region.
The concern was voiced during a stakeholders’ meeting held yesterday at Kitumba Sub County quarters, organized as part of the Common Ground project. This initiative, implemented by Integrated Seed and Sector Development Uganda (ISSD) in collaboration with Wageningen Environmental Research and funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, aims to address various community issues.
David Kato Muhereza, the Chairperson of Kitumba Sub County LCIII, disclosed that his office receives two to three cases of domestic violence every week, a troubling trend. Muhereza, along with Patrick Twebaze, a Vision Community Member, identified factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, infidelity among spouses, disputes over family property, and poverty as contributing to these cases.
Francis Muhanguzi, the Kigezi Regional Common Ground Project Coordinator, emphasized that while the project primarily focuses on safeguarding highland farmer communities and improving smallholder farmers’ livelihoods, raising awareness about the dangers of domestic violence remains a crucial aspect.
Henry Tumwesigye, the Kabale District Natural Resources Officer, reiterated President Yoweri Museveni’s call to protect wetlands, highlighting their importance in providing essential life-sustaining resources like air, water, and food.
