Rev. Fr. Mathias Kwehangana of Christ the King Parish in Kabale Diocese has raised alarm over what he described as increasing signs of dictatorship, abuse of power, and ongoing human rights violations in Uganda.

Delivering his Easter sermon to a packed congregation at Christ the King Church in Kabale Municipality, Fr. Kwehangana voiced deep concern over the direction the country is taking, pointing a finger at top national leaders who, he said, have abandoned the values they once stood for—namely forgiveness, unity, democracy, and freedom.

“It is disheartening to see those who once championed democracy and freedom now exhibiting authoritarian tendencies,” he said. “Power is being misused, and citizens who speak out against poor governance are being persecuted.”

Fr. Kwehangana also criticized electoral malpractices, rampant corruption, tribalism, and the embezzlement of public resources, describing them as major obstacles to Uganda’s development. He called on all Ugandans to come together and demand accountability, transparency, and better leadership.

The priest also touched on the need for balanced child empowerment, cautioning against the growing neglect of the boy child amidst well-meaning campaigns that focus on girls. He warned that such an imbalance could create tension in future family structures, as couples might find themselves in conflict over roles and superiority.

Addressing social challenges affecting families and communities, Fr. Kwehangana condemned alcoholism, drug abuse, and domestic violence, describing them as vices that erode the moral fabric of society.

Among the notable dignitaries in attendance was Jackline Katabazi, a Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament hopeful, alongside other community leaders.

Meanwhile, at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Cathedral Church in Rushoroza, the Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira urged Christians to use the Easter season as a time for personal renewal and transformation, particularly from destructive addictions such as alcoholism.
