Retired head teachers in Rukungiri district have appealed to the government to always consider them while planning for programs aimed at fighting poverty.
This was on Tuesday as they gathered at Rukungiri district headquarters under their association of Rukungiri District Retired head teachers association, to share how they can better their living standards during retirement.
Turyazayo David Kapiira, the chairperson of the retired head teachers’ association said that most government programs like Youth Livelihood Program, Emyooga, Parish Development Modle, and UWEP, among others, target certain categories of people like the youth, women, and people with disabilities, leaving retired civil servants out.
Kapiira said that it’s high time for the government to start supporting them since they are no longer in active service.
However, Ivan Tumwebaze the Rukungiri district personnel asked these retired headteachers to be organized noting that this is what can help them benefit from government programs.
He challenged retired head teachers to continue supporting education in their respective communities by joining school committees to guide them on how things should be done because of their experience.
The retired head teachers’ Association started in February 2023 and it comprises of retired primary, and secondary headteachers, retired heads of tertiary institutions, and retired education officers from Rukungiri.
