Retired clergy from Kakinga Archdeaconry in North Kigezi Diocese are advocating for the government to give them priority in poverty alleviation programs.

On January 31, 2024, a gathering of retired clergy took place at the Archdeaconry center, responding to an invitation by Ven. Amos Katushabe, the Archdeacon of Kakinga. The purpose of the gathering was to bring together retired servants, share a meal, and discuss strategies for dealing with the challenges of old age.

Ven. Amos Katushabe expressed the importance of uniting retired clergy and providing them with advice on addressing health challenges, particularly through proper nutrition. The members highlighted various difficulties they face in retirement, including health issues and financial constraints.

Rev. Charles Bitiine, a retired clergy member, appreciated the initiative, emphasizing the prolonged period since their last gathering. He urged the government to consider supporting retired clergy during their old age, acknowledging their significant contributions to education and healthcare.

Jackson Byamukama, the community development officer for Kebisoni town council and the day’s facilitator, encouraged retired clergy to form groups to enhance their chances of benefiting from government programs. He underscored the importance of a balanced diet for the elderly, urging them to consume a variety of locally sourced foods rich in essential nutrients to maintain their health.

Byamukama cautioned against processed foods and challenged retired clergy to embrace locally available foods to address specific health challenges. The call for government support and the emphasis on community cooperation reflect the retirees’ desire for improved well-being and recognition of their past contributions.
