Residents of Rutenga Sub-county in Kanungu District have welcomed the launch of the Mafunga–Nyamasiizi road construction project, which is expected to greatly improve transportation, particularly for farmers and traders.
The six-kilometer stretch, extending from Mafunga to the Rubanda border, will be fully graded and surfaced with murram, and will include culverts to manage water flow in swampy and flood-prone areas. The project will utilize over 115 truckloads of murram and involve the use of heavy machinery such as graders, bulldozers, and wheel loaders.
Superintendent of Works, Silange January, who is overseeing the technical work, urged residents to protect and maintain the public infrastructure, emphasizing that the road will be a vital link to improved services and access to markets.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Kanungu District Chairperson, Engineer Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo, pledged continued support for infrastructure development across the district. He assured the public that in addition to the current road works, more culverts will be installed at vulnerable points, and additional roads in Rutenga and neighboring areas will be upgraded.
Engineer Kajojo also outlined future plans to expand access to clean water, rural electrification, and improved facilities in secondary schools, all aimed at enhancing service delivery.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Emmy Magezi called for unity and cooperation among residents and local leaders, stressing that the successful implementation of government programs requires strong leadership and teamwork. He noted that area Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, continues to play a key role in bringing services closer to the people.
The project has been well received by local leaders and residents alike. LC3 Chairperson of Rutenga Sub-county, Asimiire Joab, highlighted that the road will ease the transport of goods, particularly to major towns such as Kabale.
Edimard Muhangi, LC1 Chairperson of Mafunga Forest Reserve Cell, where the road begins, said the project will improve family mobility and access to essential services.
Valenti Akampa, a boda boda rider and resident, expressed excitement about the road construction, noting that it will reduce travel difficulties and enhance safety for transporters and commuters.
The ongoing construction represents another step forward in the district’s infrastructure development efforts, with leaders pledging to continue investing in projects that address the needs of local communities.
