Residents of Mabindi, Katate, Karugazi, and Nyabitekyere villages, spanning two parishes, Kakyekye and Bikogonzo, in Nyakishenyi sub-county, are in pursuit of 4.8 million for procuring land dedicated to a water project. This revelation unfolded during a gathering held at Mabindi Primary School, attended by locals and various leaders.

The initiative, backed by Nexas Green, a UK-based NGO in collaboration with the Ugandan government, aims to address water scarcity in the Nyakishenyi sub-county. The project faced delays due to inadequate water sources on government land, prompting residents to seek an alternative without forfeiting the opportunity. One resident demanded compensation totaling 4.8 million.

According to Wednesday Twinomujuni, the Nyakishenyi sub-county chairperson, residents consented to contribute five thousand per household to secure the necessary land. He emphasized the significance of timely contributions, as additional funds are expected from leaders. The completion of this water project promises significant relief to the area.

Hon. Naboth Namanya, the Rubabo county legislator, urged residents to safeguard the project against vandalism, particularly from scrap dealers. He also stressed the importance of protecting water sources by refraining from planting trees nearby.

Brian Bantu, the district councilor representing Nyakishenyi sub-county, emphasized community ownership of the project, highlighting the challenges faced in its advocacy. Nexes Green is currently implementing two water projects in Nyakishenyi and Bugangari Sub-counties.

Byaruhanga John Bosco, chairperson of the water project, and Barigye Portman, Mabindi village chairperson, expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing their area’s access to safe water. They urged residents to fulfill their financial commitments to secure the land for the ongoing project.

While over 2 million has been raised from well-wishers and households, the community is still in need of assistance to raise the remaining 4.8 million required.
