Residents of Rukiri 2 Village, Katomi Ward, Nyamunuka Town Council, Ntungamo District, have expressed concern over the recurring complications in maintaining their two bridges.
Rukiri 2 Village has two bridges branching from Kikonje Road near Katomi Muruka headquarters. These bridges are vital in connecting travelers to essential services such as churches, schools, health centers, and markets for goods and trade. Their maintenance has largely depended on communal work.
Alfred Matsiko, the Chairperson LC1 of Rukiri 2 Village, emphasized the challenges of maintaining the bridges, which are constructed using short-lasting, perishable timber. He noted that heavy water volumes often disrupt transport, especially for students, traders, and the general public who rely on the shortcut provided by these bridges.
Agata Ruhanga Tayebwa, a resident of Rukiri 2 Village living near one of the bridges, explained how slippery and dangerous the bridge becomes after rehabilitation, which is done monthly. She cited incidents of women and children losing their shoes in the mud and vehicles frequently getting stuck.
Winnie Kyomugisha, the Katomi Ward Woman Councilor, clarified that awareness of the bridge issue had been raised previously in a council session. However, approval for permanent solutions was not granted, as feeder roads were prioritized instead. She called on well-wishers to support the construction of a permanent bridge.
Alfred Matsiko further acknowledged a pledge from Mr. Deus Muhwezi Rwambikani, the Kajara County Parliamentary Candidate, to construct one of the bridges on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
Golden Akampa Kabegambire, the Personal Assistant of Deus Muhwezi Rwambikani, assured residents of the planned construction work on Saturday. He encouraged residents to witness the event and assist with voluntary labor to complete the project.
