Residents and local leaders of Nyakinengo and Kanyankyende cells in Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Subcounty, have raised concerns over the poor state of roads in their area. In response, they have taken matters into their own hands by engaging in communal work (Burungi Bwansi) to improve the Kanyankyende-Karama road.
This resolution was made on Wednesday as residents from both villages joined forces in a collective effort to address the deteriorating road conditions, which have greatly affected transportation and daily life.
Habaasa Goreti, a resident of Nyakinengo cell, expressed frustration over the poor state of the Kanyankyende-Karama road, stating that the situation has forced even women to participate in Burungi Bwansi for the first time. She explained that residents have been compelled to work daily on the road from Kanyankyende to Kakirago, describing the task as extremely difficult. Habaasa urgently called upon the government to address their concerns, warning that they might boycott the upcoming elections if no action is taken.
Juliet Tumubwine, another resident of Nyakinengo cell, highlighted the struggle of pregnant women in accessing medical services due to the poor condition of the Kanyankyende-Karama road. She emphasized that both men and women have now come together in communal work to improve the road, urging the government to intervene as they, too, are citizens deserving of better infrastructure.
Kanyankyende LC1 Chairperson Tumusingize Arthur echoed similar concerns, lamenting that the poor roads have hindered the transportation of pregnant mothers, patients seeking medical care, and agricultural produce to markets. He blamed government officials and leaders for neglecting their responsibilities. Arthur urged residents to continue cooperating through communal work to improve the roads, given the government’s inaction.
When contacted about the issue, Bugangari LC3 Chairperson Byamukama Jaston acknowledged the poor state of the roads. However, he explained that the subcounty has over 60 roads in poor condition, and unfortunately, the Kanyankyende-Karama road has not yet been included in the budget. Byamukama appealed for patience, citing insufficient funds and infrastructure at the subcounty level.
