The voter register update exercise, which commenced on January 20, 2025, nationwide, is set to conclude on February 10, 2025. The exercise aims to correct omissions in the current register and allow voters to confirm their registration details.
Speaking to our reporter, Sarah Twesigye, who is recording voter details in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, noted that the turnout for voters changing polling stations has been encouraging. However, she highlighted a major challenge—many voters are unaware of their previous registration locations.
Sarah also pointed out a significant logistical challenge: the shortage of essential materials such as computers. She explained that she is responsible for updating records across six polling stations but is limited to using only one computer, making coordination with other officials difficult.
Similarly, Abas Namara, the Electoral Commission Registrar for Rukungiri District, urged voters to complete the update process within the stipulated timeframe to prevent congestion and the risk of being left out on the final day.
He emphasized the importance of verifying one’s details in the register, explaining that for a voter to participate in the elections, they must be correctly registered. Additionally, he stressed the need for voters to confirm their designated polling stations to ensure a smooth voting process.
