Residents and local leaders of Nyabubaare Parish in Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District, have raised serious concerns about the severe water shortage affecting their community.

Rukundo Oneismus, the area Councilor, highlighted that their parish has two water projects, the Diocesan’s WATSAN project and the Kyerunde CDC water project. However, these projects mainly supply water to other areas and are unreliable, which has caused frustration among the residents.

Onesimus explained that the lack of clean water forces residents to walk long distances and use water sources shared with animals and contaminated by human waste. He also questioned the status of the Kahengye water project, which received significant government investment but has yet to deliver water to the villages.

He urged district authorities and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to address the issue urgently, warning that the community is at risk of contracting diseases from contaminated water.

In response, Chris Kagayano, the Chairperson of Bwambara Sub County, attributed the increased water scarcity to the current drought, which has dried up many water sources.

Kagayano mentioned plans to extend electricity to the newly established Kanyankwanzi water project to pump sufficient water to residents of Bwambara and neighboring areas. He also noted that the Kyerunde CDC water project in Kyabahanga Parish is inadequate and that the government plans to take over and enhance it to ensure a safe water supply for residents. He assured the community that efforts are being made to provide safe water in the near future.
