Residents of Kashenyi Parish in Ngoma Subcounty, Ntungamo District, are expressing frustration over the lack of access to clean water. The parish, which consists of nine cells, has no reliable water source, forcing residents to consume contaminated water shared with animals, raising concerns about waterborne diseases such as typhoid.
Speaking to our reporter, Enock Muhumuza, the General Secretary of LC2 Kashenyi Parish, stated that while taps were installed in Kashenyi Town, the surrounding villages were left without access to clean water. He urged the responsible authorities to extend water supply to these areas to prevent health risks among the residents.
Sam Tusasiirwe, a resident of Kashenyi, expressed frustration over how the water project was handled. He claimed that the project was never officially launched and was instead placed under the control of an individual, leaving many people without access to clean water. He called on authorities to ensure that the project benefits the entire community rather than being monopolized by a few.
Fred Bariyo, another resident, lamented that people in Kashenyi village have never received a single drop of clean water, as the project was only implemented in town. He stated that residents continue to rely on water from ponds, putting their health at risk.
In response, Prosper Butubura, the Ntungamo District Water Officer, advised the affected residents to formally apply for water access through the District Office with an endorsement from the LC1 Chairperson. This would allow engineers to assess the technical feasibility of extending the water supply to their area.
He further clarified that the current pumped water system was designed to meet the present population demand and that future expansions would be planned to accommodate more residents. He reassured the public that the project is intended to serve the entire community, not just a select few.
