Residents in Kiganga cell Nyabushenyi parish, Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district, express deep concern over the absence of electricity, stating that it has a detrimental impact on their social and economic well-being.

They emphasize that rural electrification is essential for the community’s progress, bringing about numerous business and employment opportunities. Unfortunately, the lack of electricity hinders them from tapping into these prospects.

The absence of electricity forces businesses to cease operations by 6:00 pm, leading to increased insecurity in the area due to the onset of darkness. Madam Sumputa Hamujuni Kemirembe, the area councilor, highlights that electricity could transform lives by enabling residents to engage in electricity-based businesses, ultimately improving their economic situations.

She underscores the potential for women to participate in profitable ventures, such as selling beverages and cold drinks, with the availability of electricity. Sumputa emphasizes the impact on academic performance, as students struggle to study at home during the night without electricity.

The lack of electricity has significantly affected businesses, compelling residents to spend large sums on fuel, reducing their profits. Godfrey Tumwesigiire, a resident of Nyabushenyi, attributes the community’s challenges to the absence of electricity, noting that it hampers developmental projects.

Tumwesigiire appeals to the government and other stakeholders to intervene and provide electricity, as it is crucial for improving the living conditions of the community.
