Residents of Katunga Trading Centre, Ruyonza Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have raised the alarm over an old electricity pole, which they say greatly threatens their lives.
Residents expressed concerns that they are “sitting on a time bomb” that could explode at any moment if the old pole falls.
According to the former councilor for Ruyonza Parish, Mr. Biryomumisho Pauson Kajere, the pole is located in the trading center, close to people’s businesses and homes.
He complained that residents have reported their concerns to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), but no action has been taken.
“These poles are too old, and in the event of heavy rain or wind, it could be disastrous for the people nearby,” Pauson added. He also noted that children frequently walk near the pole without understanding its danger.
Ainembabazi Charity, another resident, expressed her fear about the pole’s condition, as her house is located nearby, where she lives with her seven children.
She is calling on the concerned authorities to take immediate action to save lives by addressing the dangerous pole situation.
