Residents of Nyakanengo, Bugarama, Nyakigugwe, Kaharo, and neighboring areas in Kabale District have raised alarm over a rising wave of theft, which they attribute to individuals suspected of drug abuse and gambling.

Led by community representatives Alex Asiimwe, Samuel Niwasasira, and Charles Mutabazi, the residents revealed that thieves, allegedly fueled by activities such as gambling in trading centers and the use of drugs like marijuana, have disrupted their peace. They reported that the crime wave has made it increasingly difficult for people to sleep soundly as their properties continue to be stolen.

The residents emphasized that the ongoing theft has hampered the area’s development, describing the rising criminal activity as a major setback. Some pointed fingers at local leaders, accusing them of failing to actively address the problem. They highlighted the absence of leaders at critical security meetings, which they believe are essential for finding solutions.

These concerns were brought to light during a security meeting convened at Kaharo Trading Center in Kaharo Sub-County, Ndorwa East, Kabale District. The meeting was chaired by Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Nyakahuma, who responded to repeated pleas from the residents. The community attributed the surge in theft to individuals involved in gambling and drug abuse.

In his address, RDC Nyakahuma urged local leaders in the sub-county to prioritize security meetings to identify wrongdoers and address the issue effectively. He pledged to take firm action against anyone obstructing efforts to apprehend suspects. Nyakahuma stressed that theft not only threatens personal property but also undermines key government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM). The PDM, a presidential program designed to uplift households living below the poverty line, supports agricultural production and other livelihood projects. He noted that individuals stealing from such programs deny the community access to much-needed benefits.

Nyakahuma strongly condemned the acts of theft, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding residents and their property. However, he reminded the community that security starts with personal responsibility.

He further cautioned against individuals obstructing law enforcement efforts, warning that such actions would not be tolerated. Nyakahuma called for unity and collective action to restore peace and stability in the area.
