Residents from Bwongyera Sub-county in Kajara Constituency, Ntungamo District, have continued to raise their concerns over the poor state of Rwitanzi Bridge, which is hindering their development.
This bridge, which connects Ntungamo District to Mitooma District, is in an alarming state and has continued to hinder movement between the two districts.
Ronald Bekunda, a resident of Bwongyera, said that this bridge has continued to put school children at risk, especially during this rainy season. He also added that it has prevented them from transporting their agricultural products.
Ronald therefore called upon the government to help them by taking action, because although they have been organizing communal work, the damages are now beyond their control.
Mirembe Dembe, a businessman from Bwongyera, said that the bridge is in an alarming state which has continued to put people at risk, especially those who use it regularly.
Furthermore, Mirembe said they have been repairing it temporarily as they wait for the government’s intervention, but they have now lost hope since those responsible are not responding.
Francis Bamanyire, the LC of Bwongyera, also confirmed that the bridge is in a poor state, and big, heavy trucks can no longer use this route. He added that it had been a vital link for coffee traders from Bwongyera to Mayanga and vice versa, but this is now difficult, hence limiting development. He also revealed that the LC5 chairperson had visited the site, but no action has been taken yet.
In response, Samuel Muchunguzi said that they are aware of the bridge and it will be worked on soon.
