Residents of Rucence Parish in Kanyabwanga Subcounty, Mitooma District, have decried the deteriorating state of the Rwempungu–Kabumburi–Kanyabwanga road, which has made transportation difficult for them.
It is reported that the road becomes impassable during the rainy season, with residents citing that even the bridge in their area, which is made of logs, is always washed away by the rains. The road connects various schools and a hospital in the area.
Speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson LC1 Rwibare, A. Busingye Kanyomozi, confirmed that the road is in a sorry state, especially from Rwempungu Trading Centre heading to Kanyabwanga, saying there is a hilly spot that becomes slippery during the rainy season, leaving residents frustrated.
He further said there is a bridge on the same spot made of logs, adding that as of now, cars cannot use that route because of the broken bridge. He called for help from their leaders to provide pipes and culverts to have both the bridge and the road rehabilitated.
Chairperson LC2 Rucence Parish, Joseph Begumisa, also confirmed to our reporter that the road is in a poor state, making it hard especially for school-going children during the rainy season, as they reach school late. He added that farmers also struggle to transport their produce to market places since they don’t have a strong bridge.
He further called on government officials, through their leaders, to work on both the road and the bridge to improve service delivery, help people enjoy better services, and develop their families.
However, speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson LC3 Kanyabwanga Subcounty, Nobert Tumwine Nyakubaho, confirmed that the road was worked on in the last financial year. However, the bridge was left unattended due to a lack of sufficient funds from the subcounty compared to the amount needed for the work.
He further said that as the subcounty, they wrote to the district leadership and their area Member of Parliament to lobby for funds to have the bridge rehabilitated as well, expressing hope that it won’t take long, and calling for patience from the residents.
