Residents of Rugarama North Sub-county in Ntungamo district are growing increasingly frustrated over what they describe as government inaction on a collapsing bridge that links them to Nyarushanje Sub-county. The worsening condition of the bridge has disrupted transport, cut off access to essential services, and stalled the movement of agricultural goods, raising fears over the area’s economic decline.

The affected bridge lies on a road that has long served as a vital artery for residents of both Rugarama North and Nyarushanje, connecting them to markets, schools, and health facilities. Its current state, however, has left many stranded.

Bernard Kakima, a resident of Rugarama North, says the damage to the bridge is their community’s biggest challenge. He notes that while residents have made efforts to create a temporary passage, conditions continue to deteriorate, calling for urgent government intervention.

Adding his voice to the concern, Rugarama North LC3 Chairperson Amanya Ivan Rwanyakibale blamed the government for delays in road fund allocations that would enable repairs. He emphasized how the collapsed bridge is crippling economic activity and development for both sub-counties.

Rwanyakibale also appealed to both the district leadership and local communities to take action. He called on the district chairperson and engineer to prioritize the bridge, while urging locals to engage in communal works as they wait for government support.

In response, Ntungamo District Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi acknowledged the residents’ concerns. He reassured them that the district is aware of the situation, having visited the site, and pledged that the issue will be addressed within a month.

Despite the assurance, residents remain skeptical, citing previous unfulfilled promises. Many now say they will keep pressing until the bridge is repaired and the road fully restored.
