Residents decry broken bridge in Kyafugwe Cell, Kyenyi Parish, Muko Subcounty, Rubanda District. Transportation services at a standstill as local leaders vow to address the concern.
The bridge, located at a place called Omukigeiga in Kyafugwe Cell, Kyenyi Parish, was destroyed recently by fast-flowing water after heavy rains on Friday, 19th June 2025.
Speaking with Boona Radio, Muhwezi Levi Abdu, a resident living near the spot, and another resident known as Joseph, said the area was badly washed away by the rushing rainwater and erosion. They added that the same location had electric poles that were set to be installed in the nearby hilly Kagisha Cell, but some of them were also swept away by the erosion.
Muhwezi called on the government and local leaders to cooperate in repairing the spot with permanent culverts. He added that the damaged road has blocked residents from accessing essential services in Kagisha Cell, such as schools, businesses, and other important development activities and structures, which are currently stranded.
In response, the Muko Subcounty LC3 Chairperson, Mr. Posiano Mukwate, told Boona Radio that it is true the broken area eroded by the rushing water has completely hindered transportation services in the affected area. However, due to the hazardous impact, they temporarily replaced the section with four small culverts (endongo) which they received from the Rubanda District Woman MP, Hon. Begumisa Mbabazi.
He expressed hope, stating that they are now seeking and awaiting larger culverts from the Ministry of Works and Transport. He emphasized that the spot will be rebuilt to a high-quality, permanent standard that will last longer and asked residents to be patient for a short while.
