Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Emmy Ngabirano has called on the public to resist domestic violence and embrace positive parenting as a step towards building a better society. He made the appeal on Tuesday while addressing stakeholders during the inception meeting of the “Real Fathers” project, launched by the Western Ankole Civil Society Forum (WACSF).

Ngabirano highlighted the rising cases of domestic violence in the region, noting that many families are struggling with poverty as a result. He emphasized the need to guide and support young fathers in their parenting journey to foster stable and productive families.

“Domestic violence is not only destroying families but also contributing to poverty in our communities. We must promote positive parenting to support the holistic growth of our children,” Ngabirano said.

Dan Taratwebirwe, the Senior Assistant Secretary who represented Bushenyi Chief Administrative Officer Sarah Ssanyu, echoed similar concerns, noting that many families are facing numerous social challenges. He expressed optimism that the Real Fathers project will help address the root causes of domestic violence and contribute to the district’s development.

The Real Fathers initiative targets young fathers aged 18–25 and will be implemented in six districts: Bushenyi, Mitooma, Buhweju, Ntungamo, Rwampara, and Sheema. According to Banabus Nabaasa, the Project Manager at WACSF, the intervention aims to empower young men with skills and knowledge to become responsible fathers and positive role models in their communities.

Deisy Agaba, Head of Programmes at WACSF, revealed that the project will cover 1,631 villages across 52 sub-counties. In Bushenyi District, the initiative will be rolled out in nine sub-counties, including Ruhumuro, Ibare, and Kyamuhunga.

The project launch was attended by local leaders, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders committed to promoting family welfare and gender equality in the region.
