The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Rukungiri, Buroni Kikanshemeza, has disbanded the Parish Development Model (PDM) SACCO committee of Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, citing incompetence and self-interest. He directed that a new committee be constituted immediately.
The action was taken during a meeting held at Rwakabengo Catholic Church, where community members had raised concerns over delays in the disbursement of PDM funds for the ward, unlike other areas.
RDC Kikanshemeza noted that despite regular meetings with the committee, no tangible solutions had been implemented. He criticized the previous SACCO committee for corruption and prioritizing personal interests over community development. “Government programs cannot stall in this jurisdiction due to inefficiency or selfishness,” he emphasized.
Local residents welcomed the decision. Twinamatsiko Andrew and January Ephraim described the disbandment as necessary, citing irregularities and embarrassment caused by the previous committee.
However, Mubangizi Medard, Chairperson LC1 of Rwarubira Village, expressed dissatisfaction, noting that local leaders had been sidelined in PDM activities.
Meanwhile, the Rukungiri Municipality Town Clerk, Tumwesigye Isaiah, directed his team to investigate reported irregularities and agreed with beneficiaries to hold a meeting tomorrow, 24th February, at 2pm to select the next batch of beneficiaries transparently.
Locals praised RDC Kikanshemeza for swiftly addressing the matter and holding a relief meeting to ensure the continuity of the PDM program.
