Motorists using the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road have expressed growing concerns about the increasing number of potholes along the route, resulting in fatal accidents. Problematic areas include Kahengye near the Kahegye water project, Kiborogota, Kebisoni town, Karegyeya in Ntungamo district, Nyamayenje, and areas around Rukungiri town, despite attempts to address the issue.
The Uganda National Roads Authority, responsible for the road, has made several attempts to repair the potholes. However, these efforts have proven temporary, with the potholes resurfacing a few months after renovation. Drivers, like Abdu Muhire, a taxi driver on the Rukungiri-Mbarara route, emphasize the road’s deteriorating condition, posing risks to both passengers and vehicles.
Boda boda cyclists, Simon Agaba and Osbert Ainematsiko, operating at Kahegye stage, describe the road as filled with potholes and narrow. They attribute frequent motorcycle repairs to the poor road conditions. Kebisoni Town Council Mayor, Alex Mugabe Nathan, suggests that routine maintenance should be improved, blaming the road damage on inadequate supervision of contractors responsible for clearing bushes and channeling water along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo Road.
Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner, reports having informed the Uganda National Roads Authority about the potholes. While awaiting a response, he cautions motorists to regulate their speed, emphasizing that some have lost their lives due to excessive speed leading to accidents in these pothole-ridden areas.
Today, Austin Abaho, a 26-year-old volunteer medical clinical officer at Nyakibale Hospital and a resident of Kebisoni, was laid to rest after succumbing to an accident caused by a pothole along this road. Religious leaders during the funeral urged the government to expedite the renovation of these hazardous potholes.
