Boda boda cyclists and motor drivers in Rukungiri municipality have expressed concern over the escalating number of potholes on roads within Rukungiri town. These potholes pose significant risks to their safety and the integrity of their vehicles and motorcycles.
Key areas affected by potholes include the Republic Road stretching from Sonko Electronics to Stanbic Bank Rubabo Road, as well as Karegyesa Road. Despite being under the jurisdiction of the Rukungiri Municipal Council, these roads have been neglected, exacerbating the hazardous conditions.
According to some boda boda cyclists interviewed by our reporter, previous attempts to patch up the roads have been ineffective, with rain washing away the materials used to fill the potholes. Ambrose Niwenyesiga and Januario Muhwezi, both active in the boda boda community, assert that the municipality’s inaction has resulted in frequent breakdowns of their motorcycles, forcing them into garages every week.
Furthermore, these potholes endanger lives as cyclists and drivers alike struggle to navigate them, often leading to near accidents. They implore the responsible authorities to take prompt action before a tragedy occurs.
Mr. Tagobya Prosper, the deputy town clerk of Rukungiri municipality, acknowledges the issue and assures that steps are being taken to address it. However, he cites delays with CHICO, the company tasked with renovating the Rukungiri-Kanungu-Ishasha road, as a challenge. Nevertheless, he pledges that interim measures will be taken to repair the potholes while awaiting CHICO’s intervention.
