The poor condition of the Kagugu–Kanyamirembe–Rusheshe road in Buhunga Subcounty, Rukungiri District, has left residents deeply concerned, especially as the situation worsens during the rainy season.
It has been reported that this road was handed over to the Ministry of Works and Transport because it was too expensive for both the subcounty and district to maintain.
Speaking to our reporter, LC1 Chairperson of Rwabwingyi B, Robert Turigye Kaheru, said the road becomes impassable after heavy rains due to its slippery nature. He noted that residents must wait for it to dry before using it.
He further called upon the government for urgent intervention, highlighting how boda boda riders struggle to transport pregnant women to Mutanoga Hospital. He said some women are forced to walk after reaching the worst parts of the road.
Patrick Mugabe, the councilor for Buhunga Parish, and Sophia Kaharuza, a resident of Buhunga Trading Centre, also expressed frustration over the road’s poor condition. They identified the worst spot as being after Kanyamirembe, stating that even a light drizzle renders the road impassable.
They added that the poor road condition has slowed down business activities and appealed to the government for quick intervention.
Immaculate Natukunda, a resident of Rwabwingyi B, said the road is full of potholes, a result of heavy rains and the absence of drainage pipes. She explained that flooding often washes away the road, putting boda boda riders at risk.
She urged the government to install proper drainage systems, including pipes and trenches, to prevent further damage and to expedite plans to surface the road with murram.
Meanwhile, Buhunga Subcounty LC3 Chairperson Benon Mugisha acknowledged the road’s deteriorating condition, attributing it to heavy rains that wash away the soil. He confirmed that it is a central government road and said even the district lacks the capacity to fix it.
He expressed hope that the central government has plans to grade and murram the road, which would resolve the problem.
