A section of residents from Rukungiri municipality has raised concern about the state of sanitation in Rukungiri Municipality which they said put their lives in danger.
This was discovered during a study made by our reporter who visited different people in the municipality to get their comments on what could be slowing the development of the municipality after almost 14 years since it attained municipal status.
Among the key issues that dominated the responses received from the public, were the shrub covering the Rukungiri main stadium, poor toilets at the facility, open defecation in town, poor disposal of wastes, and lack of street lights among others.
We spoke with Kyambondo Moses a special hire driver at Ntungamo stage who revealed to us that their stage is always full of uncollected waste that includes used sanitary pads, pumpers, and feces which gives them a bad environment while doing their work.
Kyambondo Moses added that it is also painful that sanitation at Rukungiri main stadium has been neglected when the municipal authorities have been collecting money from people who intend to use the stadium.
He added that the value for the money the municipal authorities collect from hiring the stadium has not been realized regardless of tasking everyone who intends to do it to first pay money worth 1.5 million daily.
Annet Tusingwire who runs a business at Katerera market section near Rukungiri main stadium complimented Kyambondo’s comments on how Rukungiri main stadium is handled which she said puts their lives as the community at risk of contracting some diseases.
Andrew Rugimbura from Rwakabengo cell attributed the slow development of Rukungiri municipality to political leaders who just want to hold offices for personal gains.
Efforts to get a comment from the municipal town clerk to respond to the allegations were futile as her known phone numbers were off by the time of filing this story.
