AMOS K

Residents and traders from Nyamunuka Town Council in Kajara County, Ntungamo District, have continued to express their frustration over the increasingly poor sanitation in the area, which is putting them at risk of contracting diseases.

It is reported that the town council lacks public toilets and a garbage dumping pit, leading to poor waste disposal.

Elias Matsiko, the chairperson of traders in Nyamunuka Town Council, said that they once had public toilets, but these were later dismantled.

According to Katafa, he blamed the council leaders for not addressing the issue, emphasizing that a public toilet is essential since most people in the town do not have anywhere to relieve themselves.

Yasin Katafa, the Speaker of Nyamunuka Town Council, said that together with the Chairperson of Traders, they had raised the issue of a public toilet and the need for a dumping site. However, he noted that their biggest challenge is the lack of cooperation among town council leaders. Despite this, he said they are continuing to make efforts to ensure proper sanitation in the town.

Oliver Tumuheirwe, the health supervisor, confirmed that the town currently has no public toilet. She explained that the challenge lies in the lack of space to construct one within the town. However, she added that wherever there is council land, a toilet has been constructed.

She further stated that the town has a designated dumping site and a vehicle to collect waste but blamed the problem on residents who dispose of waste carelessly. She emphasized that cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility.

While speaking to us, Sadarah Kahindi, the mayor of Nyamunuka Town Council, said they had a public toilet that did not serve its intended purpose because it was always closed. This led to its demolition to pave the way for a road. He reassured the public that a new toilet will be constructed, although resources remain limited.

He confirmed the dumping site’s existence but acknowledged that poor waste disposal remains a challenge, as in many other areas.
