The Bishop of the Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, has called for a stronger partnership between the church and government in the fight against poverty and in advancing sustainable development, especially in rural communities.

Speaking during the induction of Ven. Johnson Twongyeirwe, as the new archdeacon of Muyebe Archdeaconry in Buhara Sub-county, Kabale District, Bishop Akanjuna emphasized the strategic role the church can play in mobilizing communities to support government-led development efforts such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).

He urged religious leaders to step beyond the pulpit and act as agents of socio-economic transformation, encouraging believers to actively participate in programs aimed at improving livelihoods.

“The church must not only preach salvation but also be at the forefront of transforming lives through development,” the bishop said. “When the church and government work together, we can achieve greater impact in eradicating poverty and creating sustainable change.”

Bishop Akanjuna challenged clergy across the diocese to use their influence to sensitize and guide communities in embracing initiatives like the PDM, which he described as critical for inclusive growth.
