Residents of Kahama Cell in Kafunjo Parish, Buhara Sub-county, Kabale District have expressed concern over the poor state of roads in their area, saying it has greatly hindered economic development and affected their livelihoods.

The residents specifically pointed to the community access road connecting Karweru, Muhende, and Kahama, which they described as impassable and in a deteriorating condition. They noted that the state of the road has made it difficult to transport agricultural produce to local markets, limiting their income and affecting household livelihoods.

According to the residents, the lack of a reliable road network has reduced the value of their agricultural products, as traders are often unwilling to reach the area due to poor accessibility. This, they say, has slowed economic growth and development within the community.

Some residents, including William Turyatunga, Augustine Bagyenyi, and Christina Kabaasa, said that despite engaging in farming and benefiting from government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), they are unable to fully realize the benefits due to transport challenges. They emphasized that improved infrastructure, especially roads, would significantly boost productivity and support sustainable development.

The residents further highlighted that poor road connectivity has affected access to essential services such as healthcare and education, with some areas becoming completely cut off during heavy rains.

In response, the LC3 Chairperson of Buhara Sub-county, Joseph Baryamujura, acknowledged the challenges faced by the community. He explained that the sub-county had initiated efforts to work on the road, but progress was halted after encountering large rocks along the route, which made construction difficult.

Baryamujura, however, assured residents that the road remains a priority in the sub-county development plans. He noted that efforts are underway to mobilize resources and find appropriate solutions to address the terrain challenges, complete the road, and improve connectivity between Muhende, Karweru, and Kahama.
