The territorial police in Rubanda District have intensified security operations and taken swift action following an incident in which seven suspects escaped from lawful custody at Rubanda Police Station on 22nd November 2025.
According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Maate Elly, the suspects escaped at around 3:30pm after one of them, Taremwa Aaron, allegedly pushed a cell guard, creating an opportunity for the group to flee. One suspect remained behind and did not participate in the escape.
In a strong show of internal accountability, police officers suspected of aiding the escape—including the cell guard and others who were absent from duty—have been arrested and charged with Neglect of Duty. A separate case of Aiding Suspects to Escape from Lawful Custody has also been opened.
Despite the escape, police report significant progress in handling the suspects’ earlier cases. Files for three suspects charged with Simple Robbery and one charged with Injuring Animals had already been compiled and forwarded to the Resident State Attorney in Kabale for legal advice—a sign of ongoing commitment to due process.
Security agencies have launched a manhunt to re-arrest the escapees, whose charges range from robbery and theft to domestic violence. Police are urging members of the public and local leaders to report any sightings to the nearest police post.
ASP Maate assured the public that inquiries are underway and security in Rubanda remains stable. The incident has reinforced the police’s resolve to strengthen supervision, enhance officer accountability, and ensure justice is served.
