The territorial police in Rukungiri District have launched a murder investigation following the gruesome killing of a 79-year-old man, Bernard Biryomumisho, whose body was discovered in his home on Monday, July 7, 2025.

The incident occurred in Kasharara village, Ibanda parish, Nyarushanje sub-county in Rubabo county. According to police reports, the deceased was last seen on Saturday, July 5, around 4:00 PM at Nyarushanje trading center as he made his way home. It is believed that he was attacked later that night by unknown assailants who gained access to his house through the door.

“The attackers reportedly entered his bedroom, inflicted multiple deep cuts to his head, killing him instantly, before fleeing the scene with half a sack of coffee,” said ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson.

The body was discovered two days later by his son, Ndyareba Boneventure, who had gone to check on him after failing to reach him. He found the house locked but noticed the lifeless body through the doorway. Police from Rubabo were immediately notified and a team, including the canine unit, responded to the scene to document and investigate.

The body of the deceased was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing, and police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
