Rubirizi District police are investigating an incident involving the unlawful wounding of a police officer.
The event occurred on April 7, 2025, at approximately 4:00 PM in Nyakagyezi 11 Cell, located along Katerera Kyambura Road.
According to Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, the injured officer has been identified as PTE Yoakim Onyango, with RA 234230, attached to the Kanywero Army Detachment in the 209 Battalion.
The incident stems from a prior event on April 6, 2025, when ASP Namudoola Oliver, the Officer in Charge (OC) of Katerera Police Station, along with a team of police and UPDF officers, set out for a routine patrol in Katerera Town Council. While at Nyakagyezi 11 Cell, the patrol team, traveling in a vehicle with registration number UBN 103V WISH, came across another vehicle with similar registration details parked in the area.
Tumusiime confirmed that the officers stopped to check on the occupants of the vehicle. However, during the interaction, the suspects discharged a bullet and quickly drove away, injuring one officer in the left leg. In response, the patrol team deflated the tires of the suspects’ vehicle.
The wounded officer was immediately rushed to a nearby drug shop for treatment.
A team of investigators later visited the crime scene. While the suspects remain unidentified, police recovered six empty cartridges at the scene, one of which is believed to have been discharged by the assailants. The rifle used in the incident has not been recovered.
Investigations are ongoing, and statements have been recorded from the officers who were on patrol at the time of the attack.
