A joint security operation in Ibanda District has led to the recovery of an AK47 rifle with two live rounds of ammunition in Igorora village, Igorora Parish, and Igorora Town Council. The weapon, with serial number UG PSO 56S 4101 385 13187, was found hidden in a swamp.
According to police reports, the gun is for Kiiza Ashraf, a notorious criminal known for his involvement in robberies and cattle thefts across multiple districts, including Mbarara, Kazo, Kiruhura, and Kamwenge. Kiiza had been on the run and had avoided capture for some time by operating in various districts.
The arrest of Kiiza Ashraf was made on October 10, 2024, following an intelligence-led operation by a joint team of the Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), and the Internal Security Organisation (ISO). After his arrest, he was handed over to the Bihanga Army Barracks for further interrogation, as he initially denied any connection to the firearm during preliminary inquiries.
During questioning, Kiiza claimed that the weapon was given to him by a fellow thief known as Godfrey, who resides in Kamwenge. According to Kiiza, Godfrey admitted to stealing the gun but did not disclose from whom it was taken.
Further investigations are underway to establish the origin of the weapon and apprehend other individuals involved in the criminal network.
SP Kasasira Samson, the Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the recovery and ongoing inquiries, emphasizing the security forces’ commitment to bringing those involved in such criminal activities to justice.
